Suzani is from the Persian سوزن Suzan which means needle. Suzani is a type of hand-embroidered textile made in Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and other Central Asian countries. From the late 18th and early 19th to the beginning of the 20th centurie nomadic women from these regions used silk or cotton threads to embroider on a cotton (but sometimes silk) base. Suzanis are often made in two or more pieces that are then stitched together. Suzanis were an important part of a girl’s dowry and were used for decorative purposes in Central Asian households.
