Ikat stems from the Malay-Indonesian verb „mengikat“ meaning the reservation of the foundation of  fabric by tying  around. It is a complicated technique requiring a high level of weaving craftsmanship. In the 19th century the Silk Road oases in Central Asia were famous for their fine silk ikat. The last time Central Asian ikats have become very popular not only with collectors but with fashion and interior designers.
